Vintage Brevard 19

Good day Brevard !! Here's a shot that gives a bit more context to the one we showed in Vintage Brevard 16. This is looking south-southeast from the the Bellevue Hotel (or Orange Spot Inn). With water wheel and pool in full display, the property had commanding views of Crane Creek and the Indian River beyond. This property (which extended north up to Campbell park) changed hands between the early settlers of town quite a bit, going from Peter Wright to Thomas Mason, and then to Richard Goode in 1882 - for the princely sum of $110.00 !!


If that's not impressive enough, Mr. Goode's original homestead, which was 153 acres stretching west from Hickory St. all the way to what is now Country Club Colony, cost him a whopping $3.85 to Uncle Sam !


The first structure went up in 1884, known as the Goode House. Not long after, another prominent early family, the Campbells, bought the structure and property and renamed it the Bellevue.
