Here's a great (and timely) old flash from the past! 58 Years ago today, John Glenn became the third American in space, and the first American to orbit the Earth. With an elapsed mission time of 4 hours 55 minutes and 23 seconds, Colonel Glenn (and later Senator) completed 3 orbits of Earth as part of mission Mercury-Atlas 6 , splashing down 800 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral in his Mercury capsule, Friendship 7, which is now comfortably among our other aerospace treasures displayed at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C.

Check out the little bit at the bottom that talks about the birth announcement that went out over the Cape public address system before the flight -- any readers happen to be the bundle of joy ???
